Ebony and ivory! The different pianos and keyboards
When most of us think about a piano, we think of a concert pianist playing a grand piano, but there are two or three types of piano, here we will discuss them, from the grand piano, to the upright piano to the digital keyboard.
Starting with the beast itself -the grand piano. The giant size is what allows the grand piano to achieve its sound, as the longer strings reduce the lower frequencies and harmonics. Smaller piano's, such as the baby grand piano and the boudoir grand piano will use thicker strings to keep the tension, which allows for clarity in the sound, as string tension would be lowered using the concert grand piano's string, making it sound muddy and possibly unplayable. Size can go from 2-3ms for the concert grand piano, to the 1-2ms of a boudoir, to the slightly smaller (but still large) grand piano.
The 'upright' piano is probably what most people have when they mention having a piano (Nothing wrong with that). With its frame and strings horizontally housed inside the piano, the upright piano is slightly smaller than a grand piano, but can still be 45 inches or taller.
The electronic piano has often been mistaken for a glorified keyboard, which is a very naive view, as an electronic piano will have the foot pedals which a piano has to change the frequency and pitch. Unfortunetly they just dont sound as good as an acoustic piano, even with the advances in digital technology.
And as for those digital keyboards.....
Much smaller, cheaper, easier to carry around than a piano, the keyboard is the closest most of us will come to owning anything like a piano. Digital technology has allowed the keyboard to carry hundreds of different sound in it, from a church organ, to piano to steel drum, which gives it some versitility and humour factor that the piano lacks.
